Nonprofit Leadership Alliance and Alpha Phi Omega announce Strategic partnership, Resulting in pipeline of nonprofit leaders

Kansas City, Mo. – The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance and Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity announced a new partnership that will prepare thousands of students annually for social-good careers. Existing and future Alpha Phi Omega members, approximately 25,000 college students on more than 375 campuses each year, will now have access to the Alliance’s exclusive Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) credential. The CNP is a unique leadership training program that prepares students for successful nonprofit careers through education, coaching, service and connections to the nonprofit workforce.

“The Alliance and APO share a common vision and purpose: to build effective 21st Century leaders,” said Susan Tomlinson Schmidt, CNP, president of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. “Both organizations have proven track records…the Alliance for building nonprofit leadership capacity and APO for engaging a tremendous network of service-minded individuals. Together, we will create a pipeline that addresses the need for talented and prepared social sector leaders.”

The Alliance has been developing nonprofit leaders for more than 70 years through its Certified Nonprofit Professional program. Independent research shows that CNPs are seven times more likely to reach a leadership position as compared with non-CNPs who have similar career paths and educational experiences.

“With leadership development as one of our three Cardinal Principles of Alpha Phi Omega, the strategic alignment with the Alliance represents a natural progression in our long history,” said Bob London, CAE, executive director, Alpha Phi Omega. “This partnership will bring our students access to additional leadership and professional development training, coaching and career preparation that will set them on a path to success as either a nonprofit professional or volunteer.”

The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance was started more than 70 years ago by former Kansas City Mayor H. Roe Bartle and a group of other visionaries who believed that the greatest determinant of nonprofit success was the quality of its workforce. Its CNP program operates on nearly 40 campuses across the country. This traditional campus model will continue to operate. H. Roe Bartle was also instrumental in assisting Alpha Phi Omega during its early years, implementing strategies that supported chapter growth and organizational sustainability. This symbiotic partnership allows each organization to bring to the table assets and resources that will enhance their missions and expand their impact.

About the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance: Since 1948, the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance has worked to strengthen the social sector with a talented, prepared workforce. Its Certified Nonprofit Professional (CNP) credential is the only national nonprofit management certification in the U.S. The Alliance system, which includes nearly 40 colleges and universities, national and local workforce partners and 10,500+ CNPs, is the largest network in the country working to build a talent pipeline for the social sector.
